Blackened Steak and Shrimp Alfredo

Recipe inspired by Amanda Rettke

Blackened Steak and Shrimp Alfredo makes a very rich and flavorful dinner. Using penne-style pasta allows for the pasta to pick up more of the sauce.

One of the finest cuts of beef to be served with pasta is chopped filet mignon. The tenderness of the steak paired with the flavor of the sauce creates an unforgettable pasta dish.

Filet can be expensive, however, so Top Sirloin is also a good choice.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces penne pasta

  • 1 pound large shrimp, deveined, tail removed

  • 3 teaspoons blackened seasoning divided

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 pound filet or top sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter

  • 1 small yellow onion, diced

  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream

  • 2 cups parmesan cheese, freshly grated

  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • parsley, chopped for garnish

Preparation

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add penne and cook al dente according to package directions.

  2. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water, then drain and set aside.

  3. Season the shrimp and steak with 2 teaspoons (1 each) of the blackened seasoning.

  4. To a large skillet over medium heat, add oil. Once hot, add shrimp. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side until opaque. Transfer to a plate and keep warm.

  5. Increase heat to high. Add butter to the skillet and allow it to start to melt. Place steak in the skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side, or until browned outside and pink inside. Transfer to the plate with shrimp and keep warm.

  6. Reduce heat to medium. Add onions. Cook until softened (3-5 minutes).

  7. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

  8. Add heavy cream, ¼ to ½ cup of pasta water, parmesan cheese, 1 teaspoon blackened seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir until the cheese melts and the sauce thickens slightly.

  9. Add noodles to the skillet and toss to coat. Add more pasta water as needed to reach the desired consistency.

  10. Toss the pasta with the cooked shrimp and steak.

  11. Garnish with parsley. Serve immediately with more freshly grated parmesan.
